The Foundation Formula Online Training Course

The Foundation Formula Herding Partners Edition Is Your Core Program...
with 6 Modules Full of Amazing Content in 2 Complete Education Tracks:

1. Partnership Foundation Track
Partnership is where the real magic happens! Communication, Mindset, Balance, Connection ... are just some of the crucial elements of this well-designed partnership foundation. When you learn how to have a 'lifestyle' of partnership with your dogs, your herding training is faster and easier ... for you AND your dogs!

The lessons will help you to master dog training essentials that WORK: skills like walking together so you can get to the sheep with your arm intact, and your dog attentively waiting for your invitation into the field ... and communication skills like the 3P's and the Dance that will be soooo helpful with getting good flanks, penning, shedding ... are guaranteed to accelerate your herding progress.

2. Foundation Herding Skills Track
The better you understand the roles both you and your dog are responsible for as you learn to master herding, the better your results will be. Each foundation herding skill is taught in detail, so that you can master the applications at each level from beginner to master.

The program lessons deep dive into the core herding skills: Flanks, Stops, Steady, Lift, Pressure, Driving. The premium workshops will take these essential skills beyond foundation and into naturally developing Outruns, Wearing, Driving ... and skills that will help you master Farm Chores and Herding Trials.

The program is designed to empower beginners, accelerate novices to 'move up' status, and deepen the understanding to mastery for those further along ... including herding instructors.

Each module has comprehensive video lessons that you can watch as many times as you need...and each module has it's own set of downloadable pdf's for your homework and fun exercises including Partnership Practice and Success Maximizers.

This part of the program is self-study, with lifetime access.

By itself, the Herding Partners Foundation Formula is rich with detailed education...
and there is also the supporting role of the 3 Additional Foundation Pillars.

A Transformation Story

Meet Tresa...

"I love my dogs and if doing this herding thing means I have to scream at them and throw things at them, well, it might not be for me..."

That's what Tresa felt about her herding experience with her border collie Fleck.

"We did well and acquired a few titles on ducks in the beginning, but something important was missing..."

She loved her new herding pal and had big dreams, but quickly hit a wall.

"My intense little BC was a rocket and I was in a constant state of reaction verses being in charge of the whole thing."

Fleck would run straight up the field and bring sheep as fast as he could.

He wouldn't listen. Wouldn't stop. Wouldn't slow down.

And what started as a dream quickly turned into a nightmare that lasted for years.

...Lots of lessons with several different trainers.

...Many clinics with 'big hat experts'.

...Private training camps...

You name it, she tried it, putting her heart full into it.

And yet...Nothing seemed to work.

If anything, it only made the situation worse.

She kept getting the same advice that never worked for them...

"They all said the same thing: 'You've got to make that dog listen to you. He has no respect for you at all'.

Since most trainers felt that Fleck was "blowing me and them off", he was subjected to some "less than positive" methods.

I was frustrated at the lack of progress and the fact that I was being expected to be a "ruler with a harsh hand" and that just wasn't me.

ULTIMATELY, THAT THING CALLED 'TRUST' WAS LOST...

Now fast forward to today and their partnership has blossomed into a fruitful one ... Fleck has become the 'go-to' stockdog on the farm.

And, they successfully compete at the Pro-Novice level at USBCHA herding trials - something she thought they'd never be able to do!

So how did all this happen?

Two words...

Trusting Partnership.

By starting over from the foundation up, the rest of their journey became much easier.

For Tresa, it was all about working on CLARITY and getting very clear about what she needed from her dog and very clear about communicating that to him.

She instilled loving leadership without being harsh or corrective, but rather with calm confidence, trust, and patience.

Tresa says: "Kathy quickly helped me realize that the breakdown in our relationship was that I didn't have a clear picture in my head on what I really wanted Fleck to do – every step of the way.

What would it look like if he left the post in a perfect manner? What would it look like if he kept his shape perfectly when on the outrun? What would it look like if he had a perfect lift? What would it look like if he had perfect fetch down the field?

I'm not saying that he actually needed to be perfect, but if I didn't have a clear picture of how these tasks should be performed perfectly, how was I supposed to communicate to him what I wanted him to do?

All those years I went to trainer after trainer and clinic after clinic trying to "fix my dog" and all the while I just needed to fix ME...and our PARTNERSHIP!

Kathy's Herding Partners program completely changed my life!"

If you're like the rest of us who love this program:
You want a deep, trusting partnership with your dog so you can finally resolve your training struggles.
Your dog is smart, and that means trouble sometimes! You'd like to learn how to really communicate with your dog and develop a trusting partnership that can help you resolve training struggles AND help you deeply connect so you can enjoy the life you've dreamed of with your dog ... and have success in everything you do together: work, play, life, sports.

• You want to get started with herding...the right way.
You've seen what herding magic can be like, and you are excited to get started with this new adventure with your dog. You know that having the best possible foundation is what will lead to the success you dream of. And you know that having an experienced coach with a proven system that is based on Positive Partnership to guide you makes perfect sense. You've seen and heard about trainers and methods where the dog tries to get away because they are so intimidated, or that cause a dog to get frantic in their work … and you're not going to let that happen to you and your dog.

• You want to re-start herding...and fix your foundation.
You've already started herding with your dog, but it's not going so well. You're confused. Your dog is confused. You're stuck in this cycle of frustration that your dog clearly doesn't like, and you don't know what to do. You realize that you need so much more information, and that you don't really have a good foundation to build on, so you are committed to fixing that. You have plans and dreams, and you are eager to start in a new and better direction.

• You want to have greater success at herding trials ... you're ready to end the struggle!
You sometimes walk away from your runs, head down, holding back the tears, because you KNOW your dog is better than that. YOU’RE better than that. You've worked hard, trained hard, and yet, you just can't seem to get the results that will take you to the next level. You know that having the best possible foundation is what will lead to the success you dream of...you thought you had that...but it's just not working out the way you want.

The Framework:

There are 5 Core Elements that Unleash the Power of Partnership:

1. Start with an intention to deeply and intuitively Communicate with your dog. To dialog ... to truly listen with all of your senses, all of your being, to what your dog is telling you.

2. Strive for Clarity as you interact with your dog. Get really clear about what you want, and about how your dog needs you to teach this skill. Get profound clarity with the 3 Clarity Questions.

3. Be a loving leader in the dance of your life together. “The Dance” and the 3P's enable you and your dog to become Competent at being attentive and responsive to one another...

4. Foster a deeper, heart-to-heart holistic Connection with your dog. This means that you and your dog strive to become balanced mentally, emotionally and physically...and that makes ALL the difference.

5. Develop a foundation of true Collaboration with your dog that becomes your cornerstone for easily transforming any struggle that crops up into brilliant possibility for success.

The 5C’s Formula Teaches YOU to:

• Be a master communicator...both sending and receiving crucial bits of information quickly and easily. That translates into smooth, flowing dialog between you and your dog for the best training sessions and the best runs. Ever.

Master your own mental focus and mindset...so that you stay focused, stay positive, stay on track to meet your personal goals and milestones...and help you and your dog to reach your True Potential.

A system for assessing your dogs skills, attitude, mental and physical conditioning as you train. This helps you to you know: when to ask for more, when to back off and when to move on to the next phase of training. I call this the ‘Success Maximizers’ … and you will too!

Master balance with holistic tools. Your dogs physical, mental and emotional balance are key to your training and performance success.. Your own physical, mental and emotional balance not only helps you to be your best … and your balance (or imbalance) strongly influences your dog.

Core dog training principles that apply to every dog sport, every kind of dog, every type of situation. These core principles are the foundation for all effective dog training, and they take you way beyond simplistic 'positive training' and into the deeper, more effective and satisfying 'partnership' as the driving force for all dog training and competition.

Start with your two Foundation tracks...but that is just the beginning:

Having a 'beginners mind' is how I approach all learning ... and what I recommend for you too!
What is this D.A.N.C.E., you ask?
The D.A.N.C.E. Method
Is Another One of Our Frameworks for Transformational Results...

It’s a special way of connecting with dogs … a way of communicating and forming a partnership that decreases the overall need for training … while accelerating the training process.

The secrets of our connection with dogs, horses and other animals are not new...this wisdom has been passed down by the ancients who understood the profound connection between all living things.

What is new, is my SYSTEM that teaches dog enthusiasts exactly HOW to have that connection, to communicate in a way that allows dogs to feel understood and that allows people to easily communicate in a language both dog and human truly and naturally understand.

Today, science proves that we, our dogs, animals, plants and the earth are simply different combinations of the same elements...that we all share a DNA-deep connection.

Through Cognition ... (the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding) … we can learn just HOW to tap into the power of that DNA-deep connection that we share with our dogs.

A cognitive dog trainer is willing to focus on this connection and then apply what they have learned to create the pure joy that is partnership between a dog and handler.

Dogs are ready, willing and able to be our devoted and collaborative partners. The joy they get when true partnership is experienced, I believe, is equal to ours.

When you learn and use the 5 principles contained in the DANCE of partnership...

...anything to which you dedicate yourself becomes possible...

...any dream you have will begin to unfold, and any training or handling problem can be easily solved.

The D.A.N.C.E. Method:
Dance of connection and consensual partnership.

Art of responsible, heart-centered leadership.

Notice: Focused Presence = Competent Training.

Competent, attentive, responsive communication.

Equanimity and Training as Joyful Dance

RE: The Herding Partners Academy

Dear Brilliant Lover of Herding Dogs,   ;)

I've had a dream about building this Academy for a long time now.

I see it as a place where people who are smart, conscious, committed and passionate about being the best they can be for and with their dogs can learn, grow, share, and celebrate...together.

If you've ever had that feeling that you wish you could connect with someone who really understands you, your dog, your struggles, your challenges and your victories ... this is the place for you!

The 5C's are like words to a writer … you use them to create the core layer for a magnetic bond and trusting partnership with your dog.

And, just like the layers of first learning to write baby sentences, then short paragraphs, essays and full stories that articulate your ideas and thoughts …

… your communication skills get stronger and you are able to dialog with your dog with ever-increasing levels of clarity.

The results of this layering and dialog process are astounding!

Where you previously had a dog who tuned you out in the face of distractions, you now have a dog who is attentive and responsive as a result of YOUR enhanced ability to understand, and to communicate in a way that is so natural and comfortable for your dog.

It's as if your dog is thinking: "finally, I can understand what she wants, and now we can work together to figure out how to do this!"

The teachings in the Herding Partners Academy are not a one-size-fits-all "follow these precise steps, in this exact order" method … it's a journey of communication, connection, clarity, competence, and collaboration with our dogs.

Even when life's lessons are difficult, (as they often are for us and our dogs) trust in our teacher and feeling our teacher's belief in us, makes overcoming our struggles and obstacles smoother and easier.

THAT'S the life experience that we want to provide for the dogs we love so much … and who are so very willing to learn and to forgive our fumbling mistakes and try again.

You'll be amazed at how quickly this natural communication creates willingness and cooperation with your dog, decreasing the overall need for training … and accelerates the training process dramatically.

And, when you add in OUR Partnership … that's ME, partnering with YOU … as your teacher and mentor … as your coach with my 'skin in the game', committed to doing my part … there is no doubt that you are on your way to brilliant partnership with your dog.

In the Herding Partners Academy, you'll be studying the true nature and culture of herding dogs that will lead to a solid foundation for training, partnering and performance.

This natural, holistic approach will allow you to gain insight and understanding of your dogs, bringing communication to a whole new level.

With over 35 years experience in training and competing with both horses and dogs, and 20+ years of holistic dog-centric teaching and coaching ... I specialize in establishing great working partnerships between people and their dogs.

Successfully competing with my border collies at international-level sheepdog competitions and consistently qualifying at the top tier in North America, I am passionate about sharing what I've learned about the nature of herding dogs, how to train through partnership and trust, and how to successfully compete.

Through this program, you will take away better understanding and effective communication between you and your dog. You will learn how to be focused and present while interacting with your dogs, and how to use your body language, posture, and expressions to easily influence the behavior of your dogs.

Your dog is smart, loving and loyal.

Your dog wants to know what pleases you. Your dog is a whole being, complete with a mind, full range of emotions and motivations.

Your dog is born to be your partner.

You are smart, loving and willing to figure this out.

You don’t want to be domineering, or alpha.

You want your dog to LOVE to listen. To LOVE to work, play, train ... to be your eager and willing partner in all you do. Right?

You are now at a fork in the road ...

Do you continue down the training path that has brought you to where you are today?

Or are you ready to be one of our future Herding Partners success stories?

It's time to leave the one-way 'conversation' behind and build a true connection and trusting partnership with your dog…

Become the Brilliant Partner your dog deserves … so that together, you and your dog can reach your True Potential.

Join us! You'll be so glad you did...and your dogs will be too!

Much love to you and your dogs,
Kathy xo

Stories of Transformation ...
Sara and Rye

“I want to talk about the transformation from just a simple set of ideas and change in perspective.

My relationship with my (now retired) herding dog Rye was completely transformed from just reading one of Kathy's articles on partnership.

We were both unhappy with the training experiences that resulted from constant judging - all the time, was Rye made of the right stuff? How come he would refuse to do what seemed to me to be the simplest things? Why did he sometimes run away from situations?

A couple of transformative ideas were that I needed to understand things from his point of view and that Rye and I were only going to be successful as partners.

It really did not matter in the least whether some instructor would have picked him as her next open dog, or why not!

As soon as I started trying to understand why Rye found things difficult, he was very happy to communicate with me about what he felt he could and could not do and we stopped having meltdowns in training.

I eventually understood that some of his problems were really physical, but when he was feeling well, he always gave me 100% - if I was giving him 100% of my attention and my faith. “

Dee and Phalen

"What do I say about a program that changed despair to joy?  How do I put into words a gift so profound that everyday, without fail, I thank my lucky stars?

Phalen and I were drowning in a sea of disfunction, miscommunication and despair. My dream dog had turned into a nightmare, my life was in turmoil and my dogs and family were miserable.

Starting from the beginning, we built a solid foundation so that we can stand tall with no fear of our foundation crumbling beneath us. It's liberating, joyful and totally works! Who knew?

Today Phalen and I are fabulous! What I'm most thankful for however, is who we are as a team.  Confident, fun and madly and completely in love with life and each other!  It's a pretty great place to be!!"

Nancy and Bruce

"My dog Bruce is amazing. I know in my heart that he is a very talented dog. If you can't see clearly that my dog is top notch, it's because it's ME obscuring the view. lol.

He may not be an easy dog, but trust me, he's a great one.

...And then there's me. Staying calm, focused and unemotional are states of being that I have to work on every time I take my dog to sheep. I get impatient and frustrated when things don't go well. I love my dog, but I think dark thoughts about him in the heat of these moments - and I don't like it.

This partnering, training, clarity thing -- it does not come naturally to me. The tricky thing about training sheepdogs is that it LOOKS like a combination of mechanical skills and natural ability, all brought under command by a talented trainer. What it really IS, as it turns out, is a combination of partnership, collaboration and commitment to the process. Even the person who won the National Finals last year has described his relationship with his top dog as "similar to a good marriage".

So the good news, for me, is that I WANT to partner and collaborate and commit and be clear. I'm certain that my dog wants this too. I have seen abundant evidence of this every time we have been able to bring these qualities to our sessions on sheep. Enter my friend Kathy Kawalec and the 5Cs.

I have found that if my dog and I listen to each other, our partnership will be stronger and we'll have more success.

The 5Cs have given me a guide to focusing on the important aspects of work with my dog. I have changed my perspective from commanding my dog to focusing on communicating with my dog. I can see how being clear about what I want, with great timing and proper tone, can make all the difference to both of us. I have renewed my commitment (and enthusiasm) to a process that allows for learning on both our parts...and a vow to stop and take a breath when frustration shows it's ugly face.

I have found that if we listen to each other, our partnership will be stronger and we'll have more success. (now, when Bruce doesn't take a cue, I am more inclined to reassess my sheep and situation rather than to demand blind obedience - not 100% on this but it's a work in progress).

The 5Cs have given me a guide for how I want to be with my dog, whether it's training in my field or competing at a trial. I must stay calm and focused in order to clearly communicate the objective of the work and execute the task with competence.

The reviews are in: we are having a lot of fun in our work. And this great dog of mine is doing great work with me.

I was ready for a methodology that could take my mind off of the dog I didn't have and put my heart into the dog I do have.

Kathy's gift for communicating a great method has given me a wonderful road map for building a better partnership with my dog. Lest you think that the 5Cs are a cure for impatience and frustration - don't go nominating Kathy for the Nobel Prize just yet. I am not cured, but I AM using the 5Cs to change my approach to my training, my dog and myself.

I used to think that training a sheepdog was about having a dog that would do what you said when you said it. Turns out it's about creating a champion working partnership with a partner that trusts you to 'lead the dance'.

I now know that my dog and I can have a great partnership.

Tresa and Fleck

"My husband and I have had border collies for about 17 years. They are a big part of our lives in every way. For many years, we did flyball and agility and dabbled in herding with them.

When moving to Wisconsin a few years ago, a big requirement was to find a piece of property where we could have the space to exercise and work the dogs.

Soon after the move I got a border collie that I wanted to "do herding" with. Previously, we had only trained and competed in arena style herding like AKC and AHBA so that is where we started with the new kid.

We bought some ducks to keep at home and we had a great time learning to work them. I could easily maneuver the ducks and didn't need too much space to keep them.

We did well and acquired a few titles, but something was missing.

My intense little BC was a rocket and pushed the ducks around the course very quickly and I was in a constant state of reaction verses being in charge of the whole thing.

This situation really became even more apparent when we trained on larger, faster stock like sheep. Fleck would quickly take off up the field, sometimes straight up the field, and get to the sheep, scoop them up and run them down the field towards me.

I kept getting the same advice that never worked for us.

I love my dogs and if doing this herding thing means I have to scream at them and throw things at them, well, it might not be for me.

Seeking advice, I went to many trainers and many clinics. They all said the same thing. "You've got to make that dog listen to you. He has no respect for you at all."

So I became quite frustrated since my pal was "blowing me off." We spent many years in this frustrated state and neither of us was happy about it.

But we were both equally determined to sort it out since Fleck LOVED to herd things and I loved to share this with him.

What could I do with this intense dog and my lack of authority?

I didn't know what I thought I knew. I felt that Fleck knew how to go up the field and get the sheep. Our problem was just that he did it too quickly and wouldn't lie down when I asked him. I also wanted a nice "pace" while we moved sheep around the course.

We had placed in several trials and we got around the arena courses pretty well – we even had a reserved high in trial ribbon! Seemed that we both understood the basics.

Since most trainers felt that Fleck was "blowing them off", he was subjected to some "less than positive" methods.

I was frustrated at the lack of progress and the fact that I was being expected to be a "ruler with a harsh hand" and that just wasn't me.

After reading that Kathy's herding program was centered on partnership and calm, clear behavior- from both of us, I decided to give this new way of training a try. After all, herding is a profession centered on calm, kind care of stock so why shouldn't our training be like that too?

We were both ready for a fresh start. When we started training with Kathy, it was a refreshing new approach – just what I was looking for.

But after a few lessons, it became clear that I didn't know what I wanted from Fleck.

My big goal was to do well at trials. I thought if we practiced the courses we'd both gain an understanding of how to get around them in a better, more polished method. This seemed to work with our agility training so why not here?

I also believed what everyone had told me up to that point "Get that dog to listen to you!"  So if I could just get him to lie down when I told him, all would work out.

Kathy quickly helped me realize that the breakdown in our relationship was that I didn't have a clear picture in my head on what I really wanted Fleck to do – every step of the way. I needed to have a very clear picture in my head on what it would look like for Fleck to perform these individual tasks.

All these years I went to trainer after trainer and clinic after clinic trying to "fix my dog" and all the while I just needed to fix ME...and our PARTNERSHIP!"

Erin and Doyle

"I didn't know this back then, but when a dog comes into your life it changes it.

Doyle's birth was the start of a new chapter in my life. Doyle is a wonderful teacher. He taught me about a partnership of trust, understanding, and clear communication. He turned me into a dog trainer; the trainer of a reactive, high energy, highly intelligent dog in need of a job.

Together we enjoy training in herding and rally. He is my constant companion in all that I do and in the evenings likes to curl up next to me on the couch and sleep.

Of all the things Doyle and I do together, training in herding is what we love the most. It's the single most difficult yet rewarding activity for both of us.

We've been training in herding and working on our partnership off and on for about four years now. In the beginning Doyle and I struggled with everything.

As a handler, it felt as if I couldn't do anything right. At home I had taught him sit, down, come, stay and a few cute tricks.

But with sheep, it was as if I didn't even exist. Our partnership of trust, understanding, and clear communication was pretty much non-existent.

I did not have the clarity about how to proceed when he got excited about the sheep and we lost our communication. I couldn't even get him to sit at the gate when I asked him.

But I was not about to quit. I was committed and determined to make our partnership work. I wanted a dog I could trust and rely on in any situation. I wanted to build a trusting, long-lasting partnership.

There were moments when it was so difficult that I wanted to quit, but I was committed to Doyle. At times it felt like we took two steps forward and one step back.

At home, under circumstances that Doyle found stimulating, I worked on sit, down, stay, and come. We also worked on self-regulated impulse control. Little by little I started to see a change in our partnership.

I also started to become a better handler. I began to read the sheep better and make moves that made more sense to Doyle. As time went on I gained more competence about herding and this helped Doyle settle into calmer work on sheep.

And then just as we were making great strides forward Doyle's autoimmune disease flared and he also shredded his ACL. In July of 2011, Doyle had surgery to repair the torn ACL and then spent months in rehab.

Then in March of 2012 we had our first herding lesson in a year. I was really nervous. I spent the entire week leading up to our lesson worrying about how it would go. Would we be the same heart-connected team we were a year ago? What if Doyle was a total knuckle-head and chased sheep around the pasture? What if I had forgotten all I had learned? I was really worried that Doyle and I wouldn't work as a team.

Kathy and I talked about all of this and came up with a plan. Rather than just walking into the pasture and working, my plan was to reconnect with Doyle in the context of sheep.

We went back to basics. Sit/stay while I walked a little toward the sheep and then called him to me. Praise and treat. We also worked on flanks. I would walk on Doyle's flank and then call him to me; squaring up in front of the sheep. Again, praise and treat. This helped Doyle and I to reconnect in the context of the work.

This then translated nicely to the work on sheep; because I was much calmer and confident so was Doyle. We now start all our lessons like this. It helps us both to connect and our work on sheep is always better!

As for the future... clarity is always something I will need to work on. Sometimes I just don't know what the right move is. Other times I have trouble putting all the smaller pieces together into the big picture. But, there are days with clarity. I see the big picture. I make good moves. The sheep are calm and controlled.

For me, it's about the work and the partnership with this dog I love... And that's a beautiful thing."

Jan and Bryn

"Killiebrae Bryn, a sweet and strong border collie with much natural ability for stock dog work, came home two years ago. In choosing Bryn my hopes were for a dog I could work on our small sheep farm and train both of us to participate in Stock Dog Trials.

My frustration and lack of understanding of how to work WITH my Bryn rather than AT her was interfering with any real progress.

My first year with Bryn I worked at learning the "in's and out's" of trial training. She took to farm work eagerly and we learned to move, sort and gather sheep, push them through chutes and generally get the chores done.

We met Kathy a number of years ago but the distance to her home made connecting with her as a teacher difficult. Then we got the opportunity to have her here as she passed on the way to trials further west.

Those first few months taking on the dedication to consistently use Kathy's method were an eye opener! Bryn began to really partner with me, a joy for both us. I can not find the words to describe the sense of growing accomplishment and skill as that partnership deepened.

It is making a world of positive difference! Clarity, Communication, Competence, Commitment and Coaching. Kathy's 5 Cs. The essential ingredients creating a working partnership.

Kathy's ability as a coach is outstanding. I might mention I am quite a fussbudget about teaching competency. In my first career I supervised, managed, educated through classes and workshops. I understand the difficult task of teaching well.

Kathy is a highly competent stock dog handler and a highly competent coach and teacher.

The 5Cs structure is such a strong foundation for learning skill and developing partnership. This structure provided me with a comprehensive way to organize my goals, my process and kept me in mind constantly of the importance of partnering with Bryn. A strong foundation is in place.

A year later, my foundation with Bryn is strong and we are learning together how to work those sheep! My frustration and impatience can be held in check.

We are communicating and working together to gain competence with the active support of extraordinary coaching.

I am committed to working manageable goals rather than jumping from step A to step Q! Stepping back and insuring I clearly understand both my needs and Bryn's has made a world of difference.

Last year I and Bryn both often ended up with mindless hectic action. This year we are well on our way, running Novice Trials, doing our farm chores capably and staying calm and connected.

We want to continue developing our partnership and gaining handling and working skill. We plan on succeeding in our current Novice goals and moving on to pro-novice trialing and beyond

. Most importantly, I want to ensure I continue to deepen my partnerships with Bryn, my sweet Kayza and wild man Reid!

Each of these partnerships look different, feel different and each has it's own rewards. We are all experiencing a way more contented yet focused life these days. HOORAY."

Becky and Lizzy

"Kathy, my friend enjoyed her lessons with you, and I was looking for a different instructor, since I was not enjoying my lessons with my previous herding instructor.

I was very pleased with your instruction, right from the beginning. Lessons were not constant yelling sessions!

I love your positive approach to teaching.

I felt humiliated after my lessons with my old instructor. Over the course of 3 years, my confidence in my ability to work with my dogs was gradually eroded.

My dogs sensed that, and gradually became more and more stressed as well. Herding lessons were something that I came to almost dread each week.

You are always able to find something, however tiny, that I or my dog do correctly!

I feel that I have grown in my relationship with my dogs. I have also become much more aware of my body language and how it influences my dog.

I feel that with Lizzy, I am finally approaching something like real teamwork in herding - something that I have never felt before.

I would absolutely recommend you and your herding program, and I have! You are an effective, compassionate trainer with a proven track record.

Thank you!"

Mary Pat and Chloe

"I felt so frustrated of 5 years working with many dog trainers and  and my dog was fighting it the whole way.

Following your program, I was amazed at the immediate results I witnessed by following your simple and sensible suggestions and how fun it became to see this happen.

I love your approach, your passion for animals and your passion for helping people understand how our dogs think and learn.  Your energy and commitment is so dialed in, it is contagious.

Your methods are so positive, calm, and patient.

I am truly grateful that I found you because you are, by far, the best dog / people trainer and coach I have had in my 25 yrs of dog ownership. ”

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it matter what breed of herding dog I have?
Not at all. All herding dogs need the same foundation, for daily living, for any sport of hobby you do, and for learning sheep herding.
I don't have my own sheep, how does this work?
Most of my students/clients do not have their own sheep.

A few are within driving distance of me (in the SW Chicagoland area) and come down to my farm for lessons. Most of my HP students have (or find) a good, experienced local herding trainer and/or find a friend or friendly farmer/rancher with sheep near their home to rent sheep time. Some 'board' their sheep at a local farm that includes a field/pen to train their dogs. And some create a 'co-op' with their friends and rent a place to keep sheep and train their dogs.

I had no livestock of my own when I first started, and it worked out just fine!
My friends (or trainer) say that traditional herding methods work better, and that I should stick with that.
Well...misery loves company, as they say! We used to believe that dogs needed to be strung up by their collar, or flipped over into submission... some people still practice that stuff, right? For me, and our community, we have taken a stand against those training methods and believe that it IS possible to train a herding dog with holistic, positive partnership.
And, I have a cabinet full of trophies from high level competitions as proof of concept. (and my students too)

The Foundation Formula is key! Without that, there is no foundation, communication, understanding and partnership...and that would make it really hard!
I love my herding trainer! I hate my herding trainer! I don't have a herding trainer!
Will the Herding Partners program still work for me?
Yes, Yes and Yes!  If you already have a trainer/coach that you love...perfect! That means that she/he is awesome and open minded, and always eager to learn how to better help you...and will be so pleased that you want to be better too! Consider the HP program an awesome complement.

If your trainer is more of the outdated, punitive type and is closed minded...then it's time for a change! Let's get you on a better path right away.

If you don't yet have a local herding trainer/coach...that's perfect too! Once you have some education, and a good partnership with your dog...finding the right local trainer will be so much easier!

The main thing you need is: to be prepared, to be educated, and to have an established partnership with your dog ... in the context of herding.

When you are equipped with that, all you need is to find a GOOD, and experienced trainer who will work with you in the way you want. That's what the Herding Partners program will give you...and just why I created it!!

And: in any case...I'll be here to support you, coach you and give my expert feedback...working with you and your local trainer. It's a win for everyone...especially for your dog!

Plus: once you are a graduate of the Herding Partners program, you are qualified to come to me for private lessons, and to apply for my Brilliant Partners VIP Coaching Program.  :)
What if I don't want to start my dog with driving, the way you teach?
Or, what if I'm already past the beginner stage?
What I found after years of working with beginner herding students, it that it's just too difficult to have a safe, effective learning experience for both the dogs and newbie handlers starting with gathering. When neither the dog or the handler know what to do or how to do it, the 'training' quickly degrades into chaos and an experience that creates seriously bad habits in the dog while at the same time erodes trust and confidence in the dog and handler. Just not good.

Driving, on the other hand, allows the training setup to be controlled easily. That allows for step-by-step learning and progression. Everyone can think and learn!

It's the same way we learn, and the way we teach our dogs everything else, right? Just because a dog naturally runs, jumps and climbs doesn't mean we would teach beginners starting with running an agility course. No, we first teach them the skills of negotiating the obstacles properly, in good form, that prepares them for future advanced work. We teach them how to communicate, to have a language for making different types of turns and maneuvers. We set them up for success every step of the way. (Before herding I was a successful agility competitor and instructor)

So, it's the same way for herding. Or it should be.

With that said... the herding lessons are designed to start with driving and progressing into teaching proper flanks, stops, steady, lifting ... all leading to transitioning into gathering ... and all of those detailed foundation skills lessons are crucial, even if you are experienced enough to skip the driving and start your dogs with gathering. It's the foundation that prepares you and your dog for advanced work.

Plus: the Partnership track is key. The 5C's are what makes positive partnership possible. When a person and their dog are able to communicate fluently, we are able to avoid the yelling, chasing, pushing, correcting because of that communication.
I'm really busy...I'm not sure I have time for this.
One of my philosophies in life is to make choices on how to spend my valuable resources like time and money, and choose where my dreams can be nurtured, and I can live the life I envision. I hope you do the same.
And: You will need to devote time to watch the video lessons, and catch the coaching calls live or on replay...but the actual time spent for practice each week is up to you. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
And you have lifetime, 24/7 access to the entire program, so you set the schedule!
What if I can't attend the coaching calls because of my schedule?
All the coaching calls will be recorded so you won't miss a thing! The recordings are downloadable so you can enjoy them anytime and anywhere. If you have questions, send them to me in advance and I will answer them!
Do online coaching programs work?
Absolutely! Online video learning, combined with live, interactive teaching is Proven to dramatically increase learning and enjoyment of learning. We know that the ability to pause, rewind, watch again, and pace the lesson to suit each learner is vital. It also allows for more time with the teacher or coach. You watch, study, learn...then connect with your coach for guidance and deeper insights into the lessons. The Herding Partners Foundation Formula program is set up for your learning success!
What will I need for this program?
You'll need access to the internet with a connection that allows you to watch videos. The videos are mobile friendly, so you can watch on any device. You might like to print out the pdf's, so a printer would be nice. For the coaching calls, you'll need a phone with unlimited long distance ... or computer/or tablet with internet connection, and you may want a headset/earbuds for best interaction.

You may simply want to use the foundation skills in this program to retrain your dog's misdirected herding drive, so no sheep or livestock are even necessary.

A ball or wild ducks or geese can be a fun substitute for the herding skills and drills. Your foundation lessons include teaching you lots of skills that you can practice at home, using just a ball or similar.

Many of my students over the years had no interest in being a farmer or a herding competitor...they were simply delighted to work on their brilliant partnership foundation!

If you do want to learn sheep herding, you'll need access to calm working sheep* and a small pen to practice. Yours, a nearby facility, or if you're in range, Kathy's farm in Manhattan, IL.
(only Herding Partners members have access to private lessons with Kathy)

*Ducks or even chickens can work too!
I'm an experienced dog trainer, will I learn anything new in this program?
A big YES! This is NOT stuff you learn anywhere. I have many dog trainers in my programs, and they are astounded and delighted at their profound learning and that they can be an even bigger hero to their students. CEU's available.
What is the schedule for the program?
You can get started as soon as you enroll! The lesson modules are released every week. The full schedule will be sent to you when you enroll. You have lifetime, 365/24 access to the program.
